For seven seasons (2000 to 2004, 2005 to 2008), he played at the center position in the National Hockey League with the Carolina Hurricanes, Nashville Predators and New York Islanders. Born in Havlickuv Brod, Czechoslovakia, he began his hockey career with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds junior hockey team of the Ontario Hockey League. He was selected as Carolina's 4th choice (91st overall pick) during the 1998 NHL Entry Draft and marked his league debut during the 2000-2001 season; he appeared in 76 games that year. He was a contributor to the 2005-2006 Stanley Cup champion Hurricanes' squad. In 460 regular season games, he compiled 77 goals with 106 assists. Vasicek perished in a plane crash in Russia which also claimed the lives several other former NHL players.
