For fourteen seasons (1996 to 2004, 2005 to 2011), he played at the defense position in the National Hockey League with the Anaheim Mighty Ducks, Florida Panthers, Colorado Avalanche and Detroit Red Wings. He began his career with the Minsk Dynamo in 1992 and was selected by the Mighty Ducks as their first choice (9th overall pick) of the 1996 NHL Entry Draft. He marked his league debut with Anaheim during the 1996-1997 season and appeared in 30 games that year. He was a contributor to the Mighty Ducks squad which reached the Stanley Cup Finals in 2003. In 917 regular season games, he compiled 45 goals with 159 assists. Salei perished in a plane crash in Russia which claimed the lives of several other former NHL players.
