He enlisted in the Union army in Company L, 13th Pennsylvania Cavalry. He was honorably discharged at the close of the war and returned to his Huntingdon county farm. He was a Democrat in politics, serving as school director and in other township offices. He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and both he and his wife belonged to the Lutheran church. He married in 1851 to Christina, daughter of Jacob and Mary (Focht) Hetrick, both born in Blair county, Pennsylvania, who both belonged to the Lutheran church. Children of Laban and Christina Hall: Josiah C 1852-1924; Jacob, born in 1854, a farmer; George, born 1856-d.1864; William, born 1861-d.1919, who worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad; Harry, born in 1864-d.1918 who was merchant; Alice, born 1866-d.1946, who married Henry Musser.
