James and Doris moved to Bailey County in January 1948, with three children: Mary Ellen (Stanton) born February 10, 1944; Mayla Jane (Layton), born March 1, 1946; and Wanda Beth (Jennings) born July 30, 1947. They farmed one hundred sixy acres between Progress and West Camp. This farm was purchased in 1946 by his parents, Alton F. and Mary F. Wedel, who farmed it for one year before returning to their homestead in Lamb County.
James, born in Hayden, Arizona, on May 1, 1919, and Doris, born in Coffeyville, Kansas, on August 12, 1918, were married in Muskogee, Oklahoma, on September 19, 1942, by the now-famous Reverend W. A. Criswell. After James had served in the Air Force during World War II, they farmed for two years in Lamb County before moving to the Wedel farm in Bailey County. James raised hogs for several years in addition to farming from one hundred sixty to fifteen hundred acres of irrigated row crops such cotton, corn, grain sorghum, caster beans, wheat and sunflowers. He helped organize the Bailey County Farm Bureau. James continues to farm today, although the family has resided in Muleshoe since October 1966. In 1970 Doris purchased the franchise for H&R Block income tax service and has been manager ever since.
After moving to Bailey County three more children were born: Carolyn Sue (Patrick) on June 22, 1952; Charlotte Ann (Davis) on August 8, 1954; and James Leon "Jimmy" on March 2, 1958. Doris' father, Charles Edward Kaufmann, came to live with them in the spring of 1949 where he remained until he passed away in 1967 at the age of 81. The family raised caged chickens and from them they processed, cleaned, candled, cartoned and delivered eggs to local businesses and individuals for many years. They attended the Methodist church at Progress until it disbanded and have attended First United Methodist church in Muleshoe since then.
The children all attended and graduated from Muleshoe schools. Mary Ellen played on the winning girls' varsity basketball team all four years of high school. Mayla Jane was married at the Progress Methodist Church soon after graduating from high school. Wanda attended and graduated from Texas Tech University. Carolyn and Charlotte both played in the Muleshoe High School band all four years and attended Texas Tech University. Charlotte married Allen Davis on December 23, 1973. They now live on a Bailey County farm near Goodland and have a son Travis James "T.J." born December 26, 1978. James Leon "Jimmy" was in the FFA program at Muleshoe High School, winning the Lone Star Farmer award in 1976, and going on to get his degree in agriculture and economics from Texas Tech University. He married Susan Gail Kidd on February 6, 1982, and they have a daughter, Jami Lachelle born June 22, 1985 and a son Brant Sterling born October 21, 1986. They now farm in the West Camp community.
