"...Charles was born in 1841 in Maine, son of Ephraim and Belinda Marsh Spencer. He came to Otsego before 1855 with his widowed mother, his brother Martin and sister Climena. He enlisted August 14, 1862 at St. Anthony and served in Co. A, 9 Reg't, Minnesota Inf. He was captured by the enemy at the battle of Bryce's Cross Roads, Mississippi on June 10, 1864 and was a prisoner of war until April 18, 1865. He returned to Otsego and married Mary Elizabeth "Libbie" Slater Richardson, a widow. They raised 8 children including Libbie's daughter from her first marriage.
