C.G. Blakely Is Dead at 89

Pioneer in Topeka Insurance Business

Charles Graham Blakely, 89, of 1434 Polk, for many years prominent in the insurance business, died Monday morning at St. Francis hospital, where he was taken Saturday night suffering from a severe cold.
Mr. Blakely, despite his years, had attended the Kansas Free Fair every day last week.

He was born in Laurel county, Kentucky, September 4, 1853. He was a graduate of the University of Kentucky in the class of 1879, of which he was the valedictorian.
After college, he taught school in Morrill, Kan., and later was principal of the schools in Hiawatha. in 1892 he moved to Topeka and May 20, 1899, organized the C.G. Blakely Insurance agency, and was active in business until the last few years.
He served for three years as city councilman under former Mayor William Green and in 1912 was elected to the state legislature as representative of the Thirty-Fourth district.

October 30, 1894, he married Mattie Victor Kenney Dodge in Paris, Ky., and to them were born two sons, Charles Graham Blakely Jr., of Topeka, and Victor Kenney Dodge Blakely, killed in action in World War I October 15, 1918.

Mr. Blakely was a member of the First Methodist church, Siloam lodge, A.F.& A.M., a 32nd degree member of Scottish Rite and Rose Croix York Rite.

Besides his widow, he is survived by his son, Charles G. Blakely, Jr., and four grandchildren, Ensign C.G. Blakely, III, Victor Dodge Blakely, Jack Moore Blakely and Mary Moore Blakely.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Wall-Diffenderfer mortuary. Burial will be in Mt. Hope cemetery. The family requests no flowers be sent.
