John enlisted in Sydnorsville, Franklin County, VA as a Private in Company G of the 57th Virginia Infantry on July 27, 1861. He served in the Confederate Army along with his brother, William “Buck” Franklin” Amos.
He was captured during the Battle of Five Points near Petersburg, VA on April 1, 1865 and released from the Union Point Lookout Military Prison in Saint Mary’s County, MD on June 23, 1865.
