She was born March 29, 1895, in Sands, a daughter of the late Charles Gray and Carrie Brown Hodges. She attended Watauga Academy and taught in Watauga County public school system. She was nationally known for her hand crafting and was awarded a National Heritage Fellowship by the National Endowment for the Arts. She was presented the Brown-Hudson Folklore Award by the North Carolina Folklore Society. She was a member of Advent Christian Church in Boone.
Survivors include one son, three daughters, three granddaughters, and five grandsons. She is, also, survived by 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Alton Cook and Boyd Cook.
Services were conducted Sunday afternoon at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating was Rev. Gordon A Noble. Burial was in the Hodges Cemetery.
