U.S. Congressman. After graduating from Yale College in 1776, he served in the Continual Army, as a Major and aide to General Shepard, during the Revolutionary War. Entering politics, he was a member of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives in 1787 and served in the Massachusetts State Senate, in 1789. In 1793, he was elected as an Anti-Administration candidate to the Third Congress and reelected as a Republican to the Fourth Congress, serving until 1797. He also was Brigadier General of Massachusetts State Militia, (1796-1800). In 1804, he was appointed U.S. Consul at London, England and served until his death.
