Lawyer and farmer, Baptist. He inherited part of the Hale farm from his father Philip Hale in Greene County, Tennessee with some slaves. In 1852 he sold his property to Daniel Steele and moved to Texas with his wife Eliza W. Porter Hale and children except the oldest, William Conway Hale who stayed in Tennessee.
