Reverend Alexander Franklin Laird was born on Kerr's Creek, Rockbridge County, VA.

He and his first wife, Lilla Kate McCluer, daughter of Robert Campbell McCluer and Mary Evelyn Parry, were married on December 17, 1873. She was born November 1, 1853, and died June 30, 1891.

He married second Evelyn Hutcheson Craig, of Augusta County, VA, November 29, 1892. She was born October 4, 1872.

Reverend Alexander Franklin Laird was an alumnus of Washington and Lee University, and graduated from Union Theological Seminary in Virginia, May 1873. He served as a lieutenant in the "Boy Company," from Rockbridge County, Virginia in the Confederate army. He was licensed as a minister of the Gospel in the Presbyterian Church, September 1873, and was ordained in June 1874, by Lexington Presbytery, Virginia. He was pastor of Greenwood, Mountain Grove and Beulah churches, in Bath and Highland counties, Virginia, 1873-82, at Mt. Horeb Church, Augusta County, Virginia, 1882 to 1894, at Front Royal and Nineveh churches, Warren County, Virginia, 1894 to 1901, and his present pastorate is at Winona, Mississippi. He is a forcible speaker, an earnest worker, and an efficient and successful pastor.
