SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Lorene Virginia Bell, 87, of Springfield, passed away peacefully Saturday, Aug. 20, 2011, at the home of her son, Mark Bell. Mark and two of her grandchildren, Michelle Bechen and Markus Bell, were by her side comforting her in her last few days.

Services and visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday Sept. 8, at Klingner-Cope Funeral Home, Rivermonte location, Springfield. Burial of the cremated remains will be at noon Friday, Sept. 9, in Smith Cemetery, Alton.

She was born on Oct. 9, 1923, in Fal, La., daughter of Samuel Deckard and Alice M. Laurent Deckard. Lorene's family moved to Alton in 1930, where she and her older sisters attended a one-room school in the Smyrna community and graduated from Alton High School. She and her sisters walked miles to and from school or sometimes rode a horse and took sweet potatoes for their lunch.

She was a welder and metal worker in the shipyards of Beaumont, Texas, during World War II. After the war, she moved to Springfield, where she attended Draughans Business School, married and raised three children. She also was a waitress at the Kentwood Arms Hotel and then at the Shady Inn Restaurant for 40 years, retiring at age 70.

Lorene always put her children's needs before her own and when we would ask her for advice, giving it in a way not to interfere but to help. She was a wonderful cook and prepared a family dinner every Sunday at her home. After we all moved away, she shared her recipes and would give us step-by-step directions on how to cook them. Her most requested meal was her famous fried chicken, which none of us have been able to duplicate. She would take meals to her friends who couldn't get out of the house or just because she wanted to do that for them. She baked and decorated such beautiful birthday and wedding cakes, they looked professionally done. She planted a garden every year, then canned and froze vegetables and fruits for family and friends.

Lorene had a sense of humor that made us all laugh and enjoyed telling stories about the family from her childhood to her children, grandchildren and nieces, and we all loved listening to them. She will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by all her family and friends.

She was a dear mother of three children, Vicki Bechen-Bracken (Steve Bracken), of East Dubuque, Ill., Mark (Patti) Bell, of Blue Springs, and Tim (MaryBeth) Wood, of Dubuque; four grandchildren, Michelle Bechen, of Dubuque, Markus (Mahala) Bell, of El Paso, Texas, Miranda (Wayne) Tilcock, of Davis, Calif., and Brandon (Abbie) Wood, of West Des Moines; and three great-grandchildren, Jeremy Vallin, Sophia Bell and Abbie Tilcock, and Baby Girl Wood to be born in October. She was a treasured aunt to five nieces, June (Herbert) Orr, of Florissant, Susan L. Hahn (Ron Hudak), of Alexandria, Va., Nancy (Bob) Todd, of West Plains, Cheryl (Robert) Barbin, of Acworth, Ga., and Saundra Price of Springfield, Mo.; a nephew, John Allen (Gaylen) Deckard, of Los Banos, Calif.; and a great-aunt and great-great-aunt to many.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Henry and Herman Deckard; four sisters, Nettye Pingree, Alice L. Hahn, Bernice M. Deckard and Belle Aletha Deckard; a niece, Patsy Deckard; and two great-nephews, Michael Orr and Lester Todd.
