"Soucy" was a true daughter of the south. She was born on a plantation just east of Nashville, near Lebanon (Tenn.), the daughter of Asa Graves Rogers and Sarah Paulina Chandler.

She married William J. Bennett in 1859 in Wilson County, Tennessee. Though he was from Salem, Illinois, he joined the Confederate Army and the family stayed in Tennessee through the war -- and daughter Ida was born there.

The family moved back to William's Illinois home after the Civil War. In 1875, daughter Mora is born in Marion County, Illinois.

"Soucy", as she was known to my family, lived with family members until her death in 1927, when she died on her 85th birthday while her family prepared the birthday celebration.

NOTE: My grandfather, Frederick C. McLaughlin, grew up with Soucy living with his family on a farm south of Salem in Raccoon Township, Marion County. He knew his great-grandma well, and said she often spoke of her husband's days in the Civil War.
