One of ten children born to Wilbur and Emma Pierce of Hazardville, Gilbert enlisted in the U.S. Army on March 9, 1944. Trained as an infantryman, he was assigned to the 393rd Infanrty Regiment, 99th Infantry Division. Gilbert was killed in action on the second day of the "Battle of the Bulge"; his division the 99th, bearing the brunt of attack by German forces. At the request of the family, his remains were returned to Hazardville for burial. May his service and his sacrifice never be forgotten.
