John was the husband of Mary Ann "Polly" (Boocher/Bucher/Beaucher) Hemminger Hahn (1835-1876). He was the father of at least seven children including: Barbara E. (b. 1848), Mary A. (b. 1850), Julia Ann(b. 1852), Rosetta (b. 1854), Reason (b. 1858), Milton Hemminger (1859-1942) who is buried in this cemetery and George Hemminger (b. 1865- d. after 1930). John died between 1866 and December 20, 1869. He was a veteran of Company D, 128th Indiana Infantry. He enlisted on Dec. 15, 1863 in Mishwauka, Indiana and was mustered out on April 10, 1866. John was born between 1826 and 1828 in Ohio.

John and Polly were living in Penn, St. Joseph, Indiana in 1860 with their six living children. After John died, Polly married Christian Hahn (1828-1906) on April 11, 1872 in St. Joseph County, Indiana. Polly was the second wife of Christian Hahn. Polly had at least two or three more children with Christian Hahn including Oliver, Arthur and Ray Hahn. Polly died about 1876. Christian Hahn went on to marry his third wife, Catherine (Mikel) Hahn on April 17, 1877 in Elkhart County, Indiana.

Note: According to Civil War Pension files, Pvt. John Hemminger of the 128th Indiana Infantry died before 1870. His widow's name was Polly and he had a young son named George. George was born in 1865 and his two other children, Julia Rosetta, Reason and Milton, were born before he left for the war.

Also note: Another confusing fact - this John Hemminger who was born about 1826 or 1828 in Ohio was married to a Mary Ann "Polly" Boocher or Bucher. She was born about 1828. This is not to be confused with another John H. Heminger who was born in 1845 and married a Mary Boocher who was born in 1852.

Although there is some confusion between the many "John Heminger/Hemmingers" in this area, this appears to possibly be the son of Martin Heminger and Barbara Shook. Research on John's parentage is ongoing. Please contact me if you have any information on his parents' names or his exact death date. He definitely died between 1866 and 1870.

John's plot location is listed on page B-65 of the Bremen Cemetery Index.
