U.S. Congressman. Born in Bedford, New Hampshire, he was apprenticed as a printer and later became publisher of the Hamilton Palladium in New York, in the early 1830s. Moving to Madison, Wisconsin, in 1847, he was editor and publisher of the State Journal. He was commissioned Major General in the Wisconsin Militia in 1858, was a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly in 1861, a United States assessor for four years and Mayor of Madison, (1868-69). In 1870, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-first Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Benjamin F. Hopkins, serving until 1871. After leaving Congress, he worked again in the newspaper business and was a representative from Wisconsin for the Centennial Exhibition, (1872-76). He died at age 83 in Madison, Wisconsin.
