Daniel Booth - VA

Daniel Booth was born in 1738 to Captain James Booth and Nancy Stalnaker. It is said he was born in England. At Philadelphia, PA, in 1767, he married Jane Houston, who was born in Philadelphia in 1747. Some accounts say she is of the same line as Sam Houston. Daniel's will probated in May 1797 in what is now West Virginia. Jane died on April 24, 1797 near Belington, West Virginia. Their children were James, Isaac, Daniel Jr., David, John, Stephen, Jane, William, Sarah "Sally", Catherine, Joseph, Mary, Hannah, and Jonathan. William married Deborah Hart, a descendant of John Hart, a Signer of the Declaration of Independence.

Daniel took an active part in developing what are now the counties of Randolph, Barbour, Taylor, and Marion in West Virginia. He lived at Anglin's Ferry in 1787 and was a Lieutenant in the Militia. He owned Booth's Ferry, was a Justice of the Peace, and he served as Assessor of Randolph County. During the Revolutionary War, he was a patriot who furnished supplies to the soldiers and ran the ferry on Valley River.

"Daniel Booth was one of Barbour County's earliest settlers, and he lived near Belington. Few facts concerning him are now known. He was lieutenant of militia in 1787, and he and his wife were buried at Belington. He had six children, Isaac, James, William, John, Stephen and Jane. All of the sons were soldiers in the War of 1812, and John and Stephen died while in the army at Norfolk in 1814. Jane Booth married William F. Wilson; William Booth married Deborah, daughter of Edward Hart, in 1803; in 1804 he was Constable in Randolph, and he subsequently moved to Illinois. James Booth married Phoebe, daughter of Terah Osburn, in 1797, and died on the Felton place below Philippi. He was an ensign of militia in 1798. Isaac Booth was the most prominent of the family. He was born January 1, 1796. He lived on the farm now owned by Rev. Robert Dunham, near Belington, and died March 14, 1858, and at his death owned 1700 acres, and had formerly owned twice that much. He had two children, Peyton C. and Eliza, who married Oliver Shurtliff. He was buried in a field a quarter of a mile northwest of Belington, and his grave is now unknown. In 1801 he was a Justice of the Peace in Randolph, in 1805 a major of militia, in 1813 Sheriff. He always took a prominent part in military affairs, and for years attended every muster, riding a large gray house. He served twenty-one years in the Virginia Legislature. He was a colonel in the War of 1812, and after the close of the war was appointed brigadier general. Peyton Booth, son of Isaac, married Harriet Phillips. Their son John married Rachel R., daughter of Peter and Elizabeth (Deems) Coyle, and their children were Isabel, Emma, Cicero, Washington I., Frederick, EllaM. and Mattie."
