John Hunt was the son of Mrs. Temperance M. Hunt Gentry, the husband of Nancy Elizabeth Thompson and father of Mary Lola Hunt Thompson. Prior to moving to Angelina County the family lived in Vernon Parish, Louisiana at the time of the 1900 census. By 1910 they were living near Homer alongside Dempsey D. Thompson, Jr. and their daughter, Mary Lola Hunt Thompson and Nancy's brother, Dempsey D. Thompson, Sr.

John Hunt was involved in the lumber business and built sawmills in Louisiana. He was also a musician of sorts and could build and play the fiddle. He was a half brother to Elizabeth L. "Bettie" Gentry Stewart, the wife of James Claude Stewart, and uncle of James A. Stewart and Mary Alice Stewart Etheridge, who are also buried at Whitehouse Cemetery.

John Hunt died in Huntsville, Walker County, Texas and was buried at 1:00 PM in Whitehouse Cemetery with Rev. C. A. Lang performing the service. He died of "Flu and Pneumonia".
