Medical Pioneer. Born in Calvert County, Maryland, he was a physician whom practiced medicine in Philadelphia for 50 years. A noted surgeon, with the help of Benjamin Franklin he founded the Pennsylvania Hospital in 1751, the first and oldest hospital in America. He also was a founder of the American Philosophical Society and the Academy and College of Philadelphia. From 1749 until his death, he served as a trustee of the Academy and College of Philadelphia and as a trustee of the University of the State of Pennsylvania.
