Funeral services for BERTRAM M. BATES, SR., father of U. S. Marshall Bert Bates, will be held at 10:45 o'clock this morning at the Spencer-Sturla Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Alfred Loaring-Clark. Burial will be in Forest Hill. Mr. Bates, who was 63 years, of age, died on Monday night at Baptist Hospital following an illness of several weeks.
He was born in Carrollton, Mississippi, the son of Finis L. Bates, an attorney. His parents brought him to Memphis early in life and he attended Market Street School here. He entered the realty business on reaching manhood and was with the firms of L. C. Stacy Company, Richards & Bates, and Dean Adams. Recently he had been with the Crop Production Loan office.
He leaves his wife, Mrs. Anne Koen Bates; eleven children, Bert, Roberts, George, James, Hernando, Eleanor, Sue, Olga, John, William and Hugh Bates, all of Memphis; two sisters, Mrs. S. E.
