RICHARD COOK, FORMER CITY POLICEMAN DIES AT AGE 52
Richard Rion Cook, 52, of 117 Rolling Hills, a retired Danville police officer, died Friday at his residence.
Boyle County Coroner Dr. James Ramey said Saturday that Cook died of "self-induced hanging" about 2 p.m. Friday. Ramey said a routine investigation by the Danville Police Department turned up no evidence of foul play, and he ruled the death a suicide.
Cook retired about four years ago after serving 20 years as an officer, and Police Chief James Ryan said Saturday that Cook will be remembered for his "dedication to the special sensitivities and needs of police work in a community like Danville. “
"Richard was a very good officer, and I'm personally saddened by his death because he was also a very dear friend," said Ryan. "We used to work together as officers, and I couldn't have had a better partner."
At the time of his death. Cook was employed as a security guard at Centre College.
In addition, he was a member of First Baptist Church, Broadway, and was a Mason.
Born April 28, 1934, in Tennessee, he was a son of the late Fred and Ruth White Cook.
Survivors include his wife, Ada Moore Cook; two daughters, Rebecca Cook Glynn of Schwein-furt, West Germany, and Melinda Smith of Waxahachie, Texas ; two sons, Richard R. Cook Jr. of Covington and Timothy F. Cook of Danville; a brother, Chris N. Cook of Temple City, Calif.; a sister, Margaret "Peg" Blackshear of Fontana, Calif.; and five grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Preston-Pruitt Funeral Home, Danville, by the Revs. Albert Gisler and Andy Baker. Burial will be in Bellevue Cemetery.
Visitation is from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Danville-Boyle County Rescue Squad.

The funeral of Richard Rion Cook, 52. of 117 Rolling Hills was held today at Preston-Pruitt Funeral Home, Danville, by the Revs. Albert Gisler and Andy Baker. Burial was in Bellevue Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Everett Kidd. Tommy Dunsmore, Mike Lamb, Bill Arnold, Jim Ryan and Charlie Shannon. Honorary pallbearers were Morris Critchfield, Dr. G.B. Williams, Russell Powell. Carl Betts, Mike Rogers. Larry Lankford. Bob Jones and Jesse Coffman.
Cook died Friday. The death was ruled a suicide by Boyle County Coroner Dr. James W. Ramey.
