He attended the Georgia College of Eclectic Medicine and Surgery in Atlanta, GA from 1890-1893. He received his doctorate 18 Febuary 1893. He was a practicing physician in Alabama for some 30 years until about 1923 when he was forced to quit because he was blind with cataracts. These were removed in 1932. He was a Mason as far back as 1891 and belonged to the Sons of Confederate Veterans. He was overseer of his farm which his sons worked. He established a cannery in Rodentown, AL. The older boys operated the cannery until World War I, when the younger children took over. Obtaining a contract with Western Electric, he began and operated a telephone company with the exchange in the hallway of the old home place in Rodentown, AL.
