1.) Don Alvin SMITH died at Clarinda, Iowa, Thursday, September 8, of cancer of the face, after months of pain and suffering. He was first affected, some years ago, with a sore on his lower lip, which later developed in cancer, baffling the skill of home physicians, physicians at Kansas City, Mo., and at Clarinda, Iowa. Mr. SMITH was taken to Kansas City last fall in hope of gaining relief; not securing the relief he was returned to his home here and cared for as tenderly as possible; and finally, when all hope of his recovery was lost, was taken to Clarinda where professional skill could contribute all possible care and comfort to his closing days.
In all his suffering, which during the last months was excruciating, Mr. SMITH was never heard to murmur and seemed resigned to his condition, trying though it was. He was a member of the [R.] L. D. S. Church in which faith he died. And we believe he has gone to that rest where sickness and pain are no more.
Deceased was born at Nauvoo, Ill., May 17, 1871, being at the time of his death thirty-three years, three months, and twenty-one days old. He was brought by his parents to Lamoni when a mere boy, where he has spent the greater part of his life.
He was married to Zennette L. PEARSALL, April 11, 1892. [Error: Don Alvin Smith's wife was actually Susan Zeanette Pearsall]** To this union six children were born, all of whom with the mother survive him.
The remains were brought to Lamoni, Saturday, the funeral services being from the Saints' Chapel at two thirty p.m., Sunday, in charge of Elder R. S. SALYARDS, Bishop E. L. KELLEY delivering the sermon. A large concourse of relatives and friends, one of the largest ever seen in Lamoni on a similar occasion were in attendance at the services, The Odd Fellows and Rebekahs of the Lamoni lodges in both of which orders Mr. SMITH was a worthy member, were in attendance in a body, (a number of Odd Fellows from Kellerton and Davis City also being present) and followed the remains to Rosehill, where the interment took place, there to await the resurrection morn.
