Note: Charley's marriage license says he was born in 1887.

After Charley's parents died young a few years apart, he and his siblings Gertrude & Millie were orphaned. He was around 8 years old.
Legend says his Uncle "Dick" Haley took him in and at some point they got into a disagreement while on a mountains 30 miles from home and dumped him out of the wagon and down a cliff resulting in a broken leg. (Some family members report he slipped on ice and hurt his shin.) He managed to to find his way back home but Charley didn't stay, he left and in the 1900 Census, he was about 12 and living with Dr. Jesse E. Kilburn, a widower, his mother Mabel and 4 year old daughter named Nannie in Donald, Franklin Co., AR. He lived with the doctor for awhile until his leg healed up, but he didn't like that the doctor made him go to school.
Around age 14 years old, he went to live with a man named Ott Clem until he married. at age 22.

In 1910 census, Charley and wife Virginia Kricket was living on Short Mountain with their newborn Minnie Jewell Haley (baby Jewel died in 1911)

He had 4 children with Kricket:
Minnie Jewel Haley
Athel Lafayette "Eack" Haley
Charles Emily "Dick" Haley,
Millie Ocee Haley (m. Joiner, 2m. Emmett)

Charley had to have his leg amputated as the injury in his leg developed into Sarcoma. He was a telephone switchboard operator in the Central office in Ratcliff after his leg was removed above the knee to stop the cancer. Within 3 years the cancer showed up in his lung. Charley's wife Kricket was expecting their 4th child, so they moved in with her parents. Charley died of cancer at age 29. He is buried at Baxley Cemetery according to family members. I personally search every headstone in Baxley cemetery in June 2013 and found no headstone for Charley or his parents. The only thought is that they are in unmarked graves or they have field stones with no writing on them...there were lots of those.

Note:Death Record his name is spelled Charles C. Hailey.
