Son of Andrew Chute and Olive (Woodworth) Chute. He learned singing from his father, a Baptist deacon and singing master, who had learned music from a former pupil of William Billings. He taught nearly 200 singing schools throughout Eastern Canada, New Your, Michigan, Minnesota, and Missouri, living in those locations at different times from 1862 to 1890. During the Civil War, he volunteered for the Union and fought in the 14th Army Corps under General William T. Sherman. Over his lifetime, he collected 400 various hymnbooks along with 600 tunebooks. He wrote the tune to the Sacred Harp song "Babylon is Fallen" which was published in the songbooks "The Musical Million 6" (1875) and William Hauser's "Olive Leaf" (1878). He eventually retired to Massachusetts to work on his family history.
