Shelby Jean Hardy, 72, of Benton Township died Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at her home surrounded by her family.

Services celebrating her life will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, January 25, at the Fairiplain Chapel of Florin Funeral Service in Benton Township with Rev. William Hughes and Rev. Michael Fields officiating. Burial will follow in Millburg Cemetery in Benton Township. The family will receive friends and relatives beginning at 10:00 A.M. on Monday at the Fairplain Chapel. Memorials may be made to Hospice at Home or the American Cancer Society.

Shelby was born on December 13, 1937 in Caruthersville, MO to Harvey and Gladys Rutherford. She married her husband, Leon Hardy, on June 5, 1954 in Benton Harbor and together they have celebrated 56 years of marriage. She was a hairdresser and operated Shelly's Style Shop in Millburg for many years. After closing the shop in Millburg she continued to do hair in her home. She also worked at VM and Benedix for 14 years. Shelby enjoyed hunting and fishing. She also enjoyed the family meals together and loved to take care of everyone. Shelby had a good understanding heart that was generous and supportive in the nurturing of her family. She was the best nanny that her grandchildren could ever have.

She is survived by her husband, Leon; her children, Anthony Hardy of Nashville, TN, Robin (Rhonda) Hardy of Niles, Pam (Bob) Kurland of Pensacola, FL, Chris Hardy of Tampa, FL, and Penny (Reg) Martine of Benton Harbor; her brothers, Bobby Rutherford of Scottsdale, AZ and Larry Rutherford of Gulfport, MS; her sister, Mona Groenheide of Kalamazoo; her 15 grandchildren and her 9 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Maxie.
