U.S. Congressman. Entering politics, he served as the first town clerk of Clarkstown, New York (1809-12) and was the Clarkstown inspector of schools (1815, 23). In 1837, he was elected to the Twentieth Congress, serving until 1829. After serving one term in Congress, he again was Clarkstown inspector of schools (1829-31, 35-37) and surrogate of Rockland County in 1837.
