DEATH OF A PIONEER

F.H. Jewett, an old pioneer, who has been in failing health for the past two years, died this morning at 2 o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Thos. Jenkinson, two miles west of Hanford. The cause of his death was old age, he being 85 years old. Up to about two years ago Mr. Jewett was hale and hearty, and then began a general breaking down of a once rugged constitution, which finally resulted in his death this morning.

Fairfield Holt Jewett was born in Skowhegen, Maine, on December 18, 1813, and lived in that and other Eastern States until 1852, when he came to California. Arriving in California, he settled in Placer county and engaged in mining at Rattlesnake Bar. From 1852 to 1857 he mined and worked at carpentering in Placer and Sacramento counties. In 1857 the deceased, in company with Thos. Jenkinson, went to Lincoln, Placer county, and took up a large tract of land and engaged in farming and cattle raising on a large scale.

In 1881 the deceased came to Hanford, where he engaged in farming and speculated in land, and has resided here ever since.

The deseased always took a great interest in public affairs. During the Civil War he was appointed a lieutenant in the California Home Guards. In 1880 he was a delegate from the Second Congressional District to the National convention to the Greenback party, which met in Chicago. In the same year he ran on the Greenback ticket in Placer county for the Assembly, and though defeated ran far ahead of his ticket.

In 1840 the deceased was married in Massachusetts to Miss Milicent Richardson, and three children was the result of the union, two of whom survive him, A.F. Jewett and Mrs. Thos. Jenkinson, both of whom reside in this county.

The funeral will take place Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Baptist church in Armona, and the remains will be interred in the Grangeville cemetery.
