Mrs. Gloria Van Brocklin, widow of former Atlanta Falcons coach: December 10, 1987

Mrs. Gloria Schiewe Van Brocklin of Stone Mountain, widow of former Atlanta Falcons coach Norm Van Brocklin, died of colon cancer Tuesday at her home. She was 63.

Her illness had been diagnosed in August 1986, and she had been under 24-hour hospice care, according to a relative.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Dec. 23 at A.S. Turner & Sons.

The body will be cremated and the ashes scattered on Oregon's Rogue River, as were her husband's after his May 1983 death following a heart attack. The Rogue River was a favorite fishing spot of the Van Brocklins.

The future coach's wife was a University of Oregon biology instructor and tutor after World War II when she met her husband-to-be, then the school's star quarterback.

They were married, and Mrs. Van Brocklin followed her husband in a pro football odyssey that took them to Los Angeles and Philadelphia, where he was a Hall of Fame quarterback for the Rams and Eagles, and to head coaching positions with the Minnesota Vikings in 1961-68 and with the Atlanta Falcons from 1968 to 1974.

The coach had a strong temper and was nicknamed "Stormin' Norm." His wife was a steadying influence in his life and often controversial career.

Gloria Schiewe was born April 20, 1924, in Long Beach, Calif., the elder of two children of Herbert Schiewe, a contractor, and Mrs. Aileen Holman Schiewe. She grew up in Portland, Ore., where her father worked as a commercial fisherman, and received bachelor's and master's degrees in biology from the University of Oregon.

After her husband's departure as Falcons' coach, he and Mrs. Van Brocklin bought a pecan farm in Social Circle, Ga. He briefly worked as an assistant coach at Georgia Tech.

Mrs. Van Brocklin, who later moved to Stone Mountain, enjoyed painting, gardening and golfing and was a Heart Association volunteer.

Surviving are two sons, Alan Van Brocklin of Monroe and Randall Van Brocklin of Atlanta; four daughters, Mrs. Judy Clarke of Denver, Mrs. Shelly Burt of Monroe, and Mrs. Kirby Vanderyt and Miss Lynne Van Brocklin, both of Atlanta; a sister, Mrs. Muriel Miller of Corvallis, Ore.; and eight grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requested that donations be made to the American Heart Association, 215 Church St., Decatur, Ga. 30030.
