On last Tuesday morning January 26th, the sad intelligence was received that Mrs. Arnold Boeckenstedt had died that morning about 4 o’clock, at the hospital at LaCrosse. She had an operation performed about New Years and was apparently getting along quite well until last week when she took a turn for the worse and continued to fail. The report of her death was a shock to the whole community to extend their heartfelt sympathy to the stricken family.
The deceased was born at Hamilton, Ohio, April 5, 1842, and her name was Mary Elisabeth Vorwald. In 1843, the family came to Iowa City and in the fall of 1852 they moved to New Vienna. On June 10, 1863, she was united in marriage with Mr. Arnold Boeckenstedt in St. Boniface Church at New Vienna by the Rev. Father Orth, after which they moved onto their farm southwest of New Vienna where they resided continuously.
Besides her husband she leaves to mourn her loss three sons, Frank of Fulda, Minn., and John and Edward at home; also four daughters, Lizzie-Mrs. Joseph Link of West Point, Kate-Mrs. J. A. Moore of Meserva, and Annie and Rosa at home. Five children preceded her in death. She is also survived by her brothers, Henry Vorwald of Dyersville, Frank Vorwald of Dodge Township and John Vorwald of New Vienna and her sisters, Mrs. F. Rohenkohl pf Dyersville and Mrs. Ferdinand Luthmers of Dubuque.
Mrs. Arnold Boeckenstedt was one of the pioneers of this vicinity. She was a highly educated Christian lady and a devoted wife and mother. She will be sadly missed but her many friends as well as in the home circle. The remains arrived here last Tuesday night and the funeral services will take place in New Vienna on Saturday morning. Sympathizing friends are requested to attend. May she reset in peace. Commercial
