RIPLEY – After a brief illness, Joy Lloyd Staats passed away on Wednesday June 15, 2011.

Born December 24, 1930, Joy lived in Ripley, West Virginia until he joined the Army shortly after high school. While a Sergeant in the Army, Joy met and married the love of his life, Beverly Cloutier with whom he shared 56 wonderful years. They settled down in Chalmette, Louisiana raising six children.

Joy became employed with Domino Sugar in Chalmette, Louisiana, the largest sugar refinery in the US, moving up to a supervisory position. He continued as consultant with Domino Sugar after his retirement. He remained active in his community as a volunteer with the local Civil Defense where he helped coordinate emergency aid in times of crisis and was also an active participant in his Catholic faith as a reader of scripture and singer in the church choir of Prince of Peace Catholic Church.

Joy was preceded in death by: his wife Beverly Cloutier Staats; his parents, Lloyd Arvil Staats and Mae Kinser Staats; his sisters, Elaine Staats Rawlings and Marie Staats Morris.

He is survived by: his children, Joy Gurganus (Bert) of Chapel Hill, N.C.; Michael Staats (Victoria) of New York, N.Y.; Suzanne Puffer (Drew) of Bay St. Louis, Miss.; Joan Staats of New Orleans, La.; Mary McCracking (Eleridge) of Shelbyville, Tenn.; and Sandy Ratcliff of Hillsborough, N.C.

His legacy continues with surviving grandchildren: Jessica Hayes Roberts (Justin) of Nashville, Tenn., Madison Hayes of Carrboro, N.C., Spencer Staats of New York, N.Y., Audra and Alex Puffer of Bay St. Louis, Amanda Archote of Minneapolis, Minn., Lacey and James Howard of Hattiesburg, Miss., Christopher Hingle of Chapel Hill, N.C., and Noah Ratcliff of Hillsborough, N.C.; and great-grand daughter, Celeste Waltz of Minneapolis.

Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial and military service in remembrance of Joy to be held graveside, on Saturday, September 3, 2011 at 4 p.m. The Old Siniaville Cemetery (up the creek at Staats Mills) Ripley, West Virginia.
