Wessie Marguerite "Mimi" Caraway Harvey, age 92, a former resident of Poplarville, went to be with the Lord on September 2, 2011, after an 11 year battle with Alzheimer's disease. She had lived in assisted living facilities in Niceville, Florida near her daughter for the past 9 1/2 years.

Marguerite was born in Kemper County, Mississippi on October 26, 1918, to Bessie and Lee Roy Caraway. She attended East Mississippi Junior College and University of Southern Mississippi, majoring in English and minoring in Library Science. After teaching in Woodville and Bassfield, she moved to Poplarville to teach, and there met her future husband, James Edwin "Buddy" Harvey. At age 26, Marguerite married Buddy and later had 2 children. Buddy died when Marguerite was 38, and she never remarried. She was a very loving and devoted mother to her 2 children who were 7 and 9 at that time. It was her goal that they both should graduate from college as she was always thankful that in her situation, she had had a college degree.

Marguerite began her thirty-three year career in education as a high school English teacher, but after receiving her Master's degree, she became the head librarian at Pearl River Junior College where she retired at the age of 65. Many of her students have said she was the best teacher that they ever had. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Poplarville and always taught a class there, ranging from toddlers, to teens, to adult ladies. She was active in many other church organizations as well as community organizations, taking on a leadership roll in most of them. She was a great organizer who could always be depended upon. She was very independent and remained active until the onset of macular degeneration in her mid seventies. Marguerite enjoyed cooking, reading, sewing, playing bridge and working in her yard. One of her favorite things was to be hostess to family and friends, and she retained this graciousness and sweetness throughout her illness. Her caregivers often commented on her polite disposition and sweet spirit and what a joy she was to care for.

Marguerite was preceded in death by many friends and family members. Her deceased family members include her husband, her parents, her 2 sisters( Hazel Williams of Poplarville, Jean Mehle of Des Moines, IA), her brother(Ralph Caraway of Hammond, LA), her 4 sisters-in-law who were like sisters to her(Faye Thigpen and Fran Bass of Poplarville, Florence Magee of Tylertown, MS and Josephine Brumfield of Amite, LA).

Marguerite is survived by her 2 children, Jimmie Harvey and wife, Barbara, of Hammond, LA, and Rita Lamberson and husband, Ross, of Niceville, FL; grandchildren, Drew Lamberson and wife, Janelle, and Kyle Lamberson of Mariette, GA, Michelle Gaudet and husband, Bobby, and Heather Wax and husband, Travis, of Hammond, LA; great-grandchildren, Sara Kate and Jake Lamberson and Bailee, Giada Marguerite, and Grayson Gaudet. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews and some longtime friends.

A celebration of Marguerite's life will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, September 5 at White Funeral Home in Poplarville followed by a graveside service at Poplarville Cemetery. A visitation time will be held from10:00-11:00 the same day.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made the Pearl River Community College Library in Poplarville.
