Barbara - wife of James Bradford
The original Bradford cabin of James Bradford was located on Whiteley Creek on the same spot where the two story frame house now stands.

"James Bradford had gone to Fort Crawford for a supply of salt and shot, leaving his wife Barbara and small child alone. Indians, who were lurking in the neighborhood, came upon the cabin. Barbara hearing them, fled from the cabin carrying her small child and concealed herself in a patch of corn near the location of the Bradford burying ground. The Indians entered the cabin, and after taking everything they wanted, set fire to the cabin. The family dog which had accompanied Barbara and the child to their place of concealment, started whining and fearing the dog would reveal their whereabouts, Barbara choked the dog to death. Sometime after the Indians disappeared, Barbara and the child emerged from hiding and started on the trail to the fort. Not being familiar with the trail, they lost the way, and her husband on returning over the same trail found only a hot bed of coals where the cabin had stood. He returned to the fort and part of a garrison returned with him to the cabin site and took up the trail of the Indians. While trailing the Indians they found Barbara and the child roaming in the woods."
