Fought in the Civil War with Co. K 6th Regiment of Ohio Volunteers and lost his right foot at the Battle of Shiloh. He became an assistant professor of Spanish at the Naval Academy.

According to the official roster of the Soldiers of the State of Ohio, Medical and Surgical History of the war. Pedro Montaldo was wounded at the battle of Stone's River, Tennessee on January 2, 1863 and medically discharged from the Army on June 22, 1864.
