Duncan served his country in the Civil War (The War of the Rebellion), member of Companies B and C, 25th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He was wounded July 1, 1863 at the Battle of Gettysburg. His brother, David, served in the same regiment and died at Gettysburg on July 3, 1863. Duncan enlisted on July 16, 1864 and continued service until the end of his term.

Duncan was married to Sarah M. Byers in 1865. They had 9 children (8 sons and 1 daughter).
