WELLS - Barbara J. Goodspeed, age 75, passed away on Thursday, September 1, 2011, at her home following a short illness.

Barbara was born on May 23, 1936, in Wells, VT, the daughter of Floyd W. and Hazel (Pratt) Goodspeed.

Barbara retired in 1996 from her 42 years of service with a local employer, due to health problems. She worked in the traffic department, and then Human Resources for the firm.

She was an extremely active citizen. She was currently serving as the Town Chair of the Republican committee, which she was a member of for over 40 years. She was also a member of Rutland County Republican Committee. Other offices she held in that organizations were past District Chairperson and the secretary for the Rutland County Republican Committee. She was a past Town Justice for the town of Wells, and a BCA chairperson. She was a member of the Wells Planning Commission, Chair of the Board of Civil Authority and Board of Abatement. She served formerly on the Board of Directors for Emma Laing Stevens Hospital and the Advisory Board of Mountain View Commons. She was a communicant of the St. David Anglican American Church.

Barbara was predeceased by her parents and a brother Richard, who died in 2004. Survivors are a sister, Eleanor Mead of Rutland, and Aunt Alice G. Murray and her husband Larry of Port Jervis, N.Y., a niece, Sandra G. Peck and her husband Randy of Copenhagen, N.Y., and two great-nieces, Andrea Peck and her fiancé Steve Kolano of Nevada, and Amanda Peck of Whitesboro, N.Y. Barbara is also survived by several cousins and friends, and a very special friend and neighbor, Robert Cooper.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 3, 2011, at 11 a.m. at the Robert M. King Funeral Home, 23 Church St., Granville, N.Y., with the Rev. Alexander Stringer presiding.

Burial will follow at the Wells Cemetery.

Friends may call on Friday, September 2, 2011, from 3-6 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Rutland County Humane Society, POB 558, Pittsford, VT 05763.
