Her middle name is in honor of her aunt Kate Cannon Geiger, her father's only older sister and also his mother-in-law. (Daniel married Kate's step-daughter. He also had an older brother, four younger sisters, and eight younger brothers.)

Vera Kate was married five times and widowed at least three times. She had no children. Her first husband, whom she married two days after her 18th birthday, was her sister Lillie Mae's widower. Lillie Mae Cannon 1908–1926 had died in childbirth two years before, at 17, and Lillie Mae's daughter Lola Mae had died a few days after her first birthday in 1927. Nothing is known about Vera Kate's second husband, Johnny Smith. She buried her last three husbands in Walter Garner's family plot. Her fourth husband, Gid Godwin, was her first cousin, son of her aunt Frances Cannon Godwin, who was nearest in age of the fifteen Cannon siblings to her father, Daniel. Vera Kate and Gid, who married when they were both in their forties, said that they got married because they both liked to travel, and they wanted to travel together. They had been always been friends as well as cousins. Her longest marriage was to her last husband, Carl Moore.
