Daniel Williams Jr. was the first Postmaster in Williamsport, which was named after him in 1883. He was also the first Register of Deeds of Burleigh County, ND when it was organized. He ranched in Emmons County, until he was appointed the first warden of the North Dakota Penitentiary in 1883, where he remained for eight years, and was charged with the building of the institution. In 1895 he and his wife , Mary, whom he married in 1886, moved to a "splendid ranch" at Painted Woods. His wife Mary died in 1909.
