The daughter of Aaron and Mariah (Wall) Short.

She married first 21 Feb 1844, Lonedell, Franklin Co., MO, to John Cole; the parents being present and consenting. Thomas Boyd, Justice of the Peace for Calvey, officiated.

Mary and John had two daughters, Mariah and Mary Cole, before he died. By 1850, Mary was married to Julius Emmons. Although her children Mariah and Mary Cole are listed living next door with Julius's stepchildren Maleta and John Hildebrand, it is apparent that this is all one large household in two houses as Maleta is unmarried and only 18 years old:

1850 census, Franklin Co., MO, p. 123
Julius Emmons M 39 Missouri
Mary Emmons F 28 Missouri
Louisa Emmons F 13 Missouri
James Emmons M 11 Missouri
Mary Emmons F 8 Missouri
Seth Emmons M 6 Missouri
Louisa Emmons F 4 Missouri
[next door]
Malitta Hildebrand F 18 Missouri
John Hildebrand M 14 Missouri
Mariah Cole F 5 Missouri
Mary J Cole F 1 Missouri

Julius and Mary had one more daughter, Thankful Emmons born in 1851.

Mary died before the 1860 census. Julius has numerous of his children stepchildren from his previous wives living with him. His and Mary's daughters Mary and Thankful Emmons are living with him , but not Mariah.

The Julius Emmons family was counted twice on the census, with variations, but all members can be identified:
