Dilla Mae Hanner was born on March 27, 1883, in Donnellson, Montgomery County, Illinois, to parents Harrison Shelby Hanner and Samira Maria (Bigham) Hanner. Her parents moved the family to Pawnee County, Oklahoma, in 1883, where her father held public offices, including Justice of the Peace.
On August 6, 1902, Dilla married Frank Clyde Shoemaker in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The couple settled in Pawnee, Oklahoma, where Frank served as the County Clerk and a lawyer. By 1916, Frank and Dilla's family was complete, with the addition of children Maxine, Audna, Marginese, Franklin, Elaine, and Adena.
In 1916, Dilla's husband ran for congress as a Democrat in what was the first congressional district of Oklahoma. The Republican nominee ultimately won the seat. Before 1920, Dilla and Frank moved their family to Fort Worth, Texas, where Frank worked as an executive for an oil company. Later that decade, Frank established a legal practice in Los Angeles, where he moved the family, except for older daughters, Maxine and Audna, who, having married, remained in Texas.
In December 1929, tragedy came to Dilla's family when Audna, who was visiting from Texas with her two-year-old daughter, died in a train crossing accident. Frank investigated the accident and decided not to sue the railroad.
Dilla died on March 11, 1974, in Los Angeles, nearly five years after the death of her husband.
Scott Day Freeman, a great grandson of Dilla Mae (Hanner) Shoemaker, wrote the foregoing memorial for Frank Clyde Shoemaker, which was last updated on March 7, 2014.
