Frank Clyde Shoemaker was a father of six, a lawyer, and a congressional and mayoral candidate. Born in Cisco, Illinois, on August 9, 1877, to Columbus Washington Shoemaker and Nancy Ellen (Williams) Shoemaker, Frank moved with his parents to Missouri and Kansas before settling in Oklahoma.

Frank married Dilla Mae Hanner, daughter of Harrison Shelby Hanner and Samira Maria (Bigham) Hanner, in Stillwater, Oklahoma, on August 6, 1902. The couple began their family in Pawnee, Oklahoma, where Frank served as the County Clerk and built a legal practice. By 1916, Frank and Dilla's family was complete, with the addition of children Maxine, Audna, Marginese, Franklin, Elaine, and Adena.

In 1916, Frank ran for congress as a Democrat in what was the first congressional district of Oklahoma. The Republican nominee ultimately won the seat. Before 1920, Frank moved his family to Fort Worth, Texas, where Frank worked as an executive for an oil company. Later that decade, Frank established a legal practice in Los Angeles, where he moved the family, except for older daughters, Maxine and Audna, who, having married, remained in Texas.

In December 1929, tragedy came to Frank's family when Audna, who was visiting from Texas with her two-year-old daughter, died in a train crossing accident. Frank investigated the accident and decided not to file a lawsuit.

In 1933 and 1937, Frank ran for Mayor of Los Angeles but did not gain enough votes to come out of the primary. By 1943, Frank was working for the Vega Aircraft Corporation, a division of Lockheed Corporation, in Los Angeles.

During his legal career, Frank served as a city attorney, county attorney, county judge, president of a bar association, and member of the codifying commission of Oklahoma. He appeared in federal or state courts in 23 states, and in courts in Canada and Mexico. In California, he made numerous appearances in courts in Los Angeles, Ventura, Orange, San Bernadino and San Diego counties, as well as many municipal courts.

Frank died on November 19, 1969, in Los Angeles. His wife Dilla died in 1974.

Scott Day Freeman, a great grandson of Frank Clyde Shoemaker, wrote the foregoing memorial, which was last updated on September 10, 2017.
