A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in Dauphin County October 30, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg November 3 as a private with Co. K, 173rd Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and discharged by surgeon's certificate April 27, 1863. The reason for his discharge are as yet unknown, but it was not due to wounds as the regiment reported no battle casualties. He is in the company register as "Batdorff."
Several of his children spelled their surname "Baddorf," and he is in the censuses with a variety of spellings.
