JAMES HALLORAN DEAD
Veteran Mining Man Who Came into
the Hills With Custer
James T. Halloran, aged 70 years, one of the best known mining men of the Black Hills, died suddenly at his home on South Mill street last evening at 6 o'clock. For a year past he had been a sufferer from heart trouble, but at no time until an hour or so before his death, did it appear that the affection was of a dangerous character. The immediate cause of his demise was a hemorrhage. Deceased was born in County Clare, Ireland and came to the United States when a young man. He lived in Kentucky for a time and after coming west in the early seventies, joined one of the Custer expeditions and entered the Black Hills in 1876. He remained and located in Deadwood when the gold excitement was at its height there and lived there the greater part of the time until after his marriage in 1887, although his principal mining interests were established in Lead. In 1886 he was married in Deadwood to Miss Dolan, by whom he is survived. He leaves also five children, all but one of whom are residents of Lead. The children are Mrs. Eleanor Anthlett, wife of H.W. Amphlett of San Mateo, California; James, Rose, George and Albert Halloran of Lead. William, another son, died early this year, aged 24 years. He has a half brother, Thomas McAllen, interested in a transport plying between San Francisco and Chinese ports.
For many years James Halloran was among the most prominent of mining men of the Black Hills and was one who profited materially through the sale of mining property. Included in his holding was the Golden Crown claim which was sold to the Homestake company for a large consideration and the Durango, which became part of the holdings of the late Hidden Fortune company and later passed into the ownership of the Homestake. He also owned the ground on which the Ellison hoist of the Homestake company now stands. At the time of his death he was the owner of mining property in the Yellow Creek district, for which he was offered a large price during the time of the recent high prices in the tungsten market.
Mr. Halloran and his family resided in Lead until eleven years ago, when he bought a place in Spearfish, where he lived for six years and then moved to California. A year and a half ago they returned to Lead and the family have since made their home here.
Deceased was a member of the Lead lodge of Elks, of the A.O.U.W. and of the Society of Black Hills Pioneers. The time oft he funeral has not yet been announced.

Lead Daily Call - 1905 Souvenir Edition - "James T. Halloran - This well known citizen of Lead was born in county Claire, Ireland, on the 15th of July, 1847. On coming to America he first located in Louisville, Ky., where he attended school and where he also learned the trade of a bridge builder. From Louisville he came west to Omaha, where he resided for a couple of years and during which time he worked at his trade in the railway shops of that city. Going from there to Bismarck, or rather Fort A. Lincoln, he joined General Custer's expedition, which left that post the 2d of June 1874, for the Black Hills. Mr. Halloran accompanied the expedition to the Hills and back to the fort, being engaged in the capacity of a packer. The trip of this expedition has long since passed into history, and is noted as having been the first military expedition to have explored the Hills. In 1876 Mr. Halloran returned to the Hills and the following year located the Golden Crown mine, which he held until a few years since when he disposed of the same to the hidden Fortune people for a very valuable consideration. Mr. Halloran was united in marriage September 20, 1887, to Miss Elizabeth Dolan, and the result of this union has been the birth of six children - four sons and two daughters. Their two oldest children, Nellie and Jimmie, are now students at Notre Dame, Ind., university. Mr. Halloran is a member of the A.O.U.W., Elks, and several other fraternal orders."
