Janette or Janet was a daughter of Elspath Robertson and John Smith. Elspath's mother also was named "Janet Smith", the wife of David Robertson.

John Forbes Jr. and Janette Smith were married 7th April 1849 at St. Monance, Fife, Scotland. Their only daughter, Davinie Smith Forbes was born at St. Monance, Fifeschire, Scotland on February 11, 1850.

On the 28th of February, 1853, the Forbes family left Liverpool with 434 other passengers to come to the United States of the ship "International". They arrived in New Orleans on 23 April 1853.

The family crossed the Great Plains in a covered wagon. They immigrated with the Jacob Gates Wagon Company of 1853 along with her husband, John Forbes and three year old daughter, Davinie. They left Keokuk, Iowa on 3 June 1853, arriving in the Salt Lake Valley between the 26th and the 30th of September.

The trip across the plains proved too much for Janette. She and her daughter, Davinie, had to walk much of the way and although she survived the hardships of the plains, it left Janette so weak that she died about a month after their arrival in Salt Lake City in October of 1853, the day still in question.

This mother, who desired so much to reach American and Zion, was not able to raise her sweet daughter in this life. Janette was only 31 years old when she died and her daughter Davinie was only 3 years old when she lost her mother.
