Charles R. Johnson, 80, of Evansville passed away Monday August 29, 2011 at VNA Charlier Hospice. Charles retired from the Evansville Police Department after 27 years and was the Lieutenant in charge of the Juvenile division. He founded the police school liaison program and was an instructor at the police academy. After retiring from the police department he worked for the EVSC as the manager of pupil transportation for over 22 years, retiring in 2001. While with the EVSC he served on the State bus transportation board and was given the Edward Peay award for his outstanding work in bus transportation. He was a member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, the FOP, where he was very active at the PAL camp. He was also a member of the Evansville Kennel Club and was a Kentucky Colonel. Charles was very active in scouting, being an Eagle Scout and received the AD ATARI DEI from the Catholic Diocese. He was a scout master at Memorial High School and served on the Girl Scouts board. He served in the Naval Reserve for 13 years. Charles was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Bertha Johnson and daughter Kathleen M. Johnson. He is survived by his wife of 56 years Helen (Barney) Johnson; daughter Joni Marie Johnson of Evansville; brother-in-law James Barney; niece Terri Barney Kinney. Visitation will be from 3:00 – 7:00 pm Thursday September 1, 2011 at Ziemer Funeral Home North Chapel, 6300 N. First Ave., Evansville, IN 47710 with a memorial service at 7:00 pm. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 am Friday September 2, 2011 at the funeral home and continue at 11:00 am at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 918 West Mill Rd., Evansville, IN 47710 with Fr. Paul Ferguson officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery where the FOP will conduct graveside services.
