Dr. Newkirk was born in Calhoun County, Mich., in 1847, the oldest of five children. His parents, Cornelius and Anna Newkirk, were both schoolteachers. By 1858 the family had moved to Stark County, Ill., where they ran a family farm.
In 1873 he married Martha E. Martin. Their son and only child, John Martin Newkirk, was born in 1879.
After obtaining his degree in dentistry, from 1883-1900 Dr. Newkirk practiced in Chicago. In 1893 he served as president of the Illinois State Dental Association.
In 1900 he moved his dental practice to Los Angeles, where from 1901-1905 he was the second dean of the University of Southern California College of Dentistry, established only four years earlier. He later moved to Pasadena, Calif., and practiced dentistry there. He also served as a member of the California board of state dental examiners.
In April 1921, less than a month from his 74th birthday, he passed away at his home in Altadena. The cause of death was determined to be chronic heart disease -- myocarditis.
An avid bird-watcher, recognized national authority on birds and an activist for the protection of native species, Dr. Newkirk was among a group of charter members who in 1904 established the first California chapter of the National Audubon Society, in Los Angeles. He served as the chapter's first president. He wrote many poems and articles regarding birds and was a frequent contributor to ornithological publications The Condor and Bird-Lore magazine. Two years after his death, his bird poems were compiled by his wife and published in a collection titled "Bird Songs of Memory" (Los Angeles, Bireley & Elson Printing Co., 1923).
Dr. Newkirk had a lifelong interest in, and admiration of, Abraham Lincoln, dating from the age of 11 when he heard the future president speak at Toulon, Illinois, during the Lincoln-Douglas debates. Years later Dr. Newkirk gave an account of his up-close experience in an article titled "A Boy at Lincoln's Feet," which was published in The Outlook in February 1921. He also authored two books on the 16th president, "Lincoln Life Sketches in Verse and Prose" (New York, Duffield and Company, 1920) and "Lincoln Lessons for Today" (New York, Duffield and Company, 1921). Copies of both are archived in the Library of Congress.
Dr. Newkirk was also the author of a textbook on state history, economics and geography for young schoolchildren, titled "Rhymes of the States" (New York, The Century Co., 1896), in which the attributes of each U.S. state and territory were described in poetic verse along with illustrations by Henry Fenn. In addition, he wrote the lyrics to an 1896 piano and vocal sheet music publication, "Songs of Mackinac Island," containing the songs "My Mackina" and "Robertson's Folly," both with music by Chas. H. Gabriel.
All four of Dr. Newkirk's books are currently available in paperback reprint.
