Michael and Caroline [Roake] Batteen
In 1871, the ship Gesnar set sail from Prussia to America. The ship's passenger list included Michael and Caroline (Roake) Batteen and their seven children: Albert, William, Emelia, John, Augusta, Reynold and Herman. Michael and Caroline Batteen were married in 1852 in Germany.
They, with their children settled in Berlin, Wis. In the early 1880's Michael and some of his sons came to Wesley Township, Faulk County, Dakota Territory. They took up homesteads on Section 25. Michael, the father, homesteaded on the SE 1/4, William on the NE 1/4, Albert on the NW 1/4, and John on the SW 1/4.
They returned to Wisconsin and brought their families back with them to Faulk County in 1886.
Michael was lost during the blizzard of 1888 and to save himself dug into a haystack. He was fine except that one hand had not been covered enough and froze. Consequently, a doctor had to come to their home and amputate the hand, performing the operation on the kitchen table.
Michael Batteen died in 1900 and was buried in the Fairview Cemetery at Northville.
Caroline Batteen died Feb. 6, 1897 and was buried in Fairview Cemetery at Northville.
