Lewis W. Spitz Sr. was born in Minden, Nebraska (d. 8 June 1996). He graduated from Concordia Seminary (Saint Louis) in 1918 and served as pastor in Lovell, Wyoming, and Bertrand and Blue Hill, Nebraska. He was a professor at Saint Paul’s College (Concordia, Missouri) and at Concordia Seminary (Saint Louis). In 1930 he received an M.A. from Washington University (Saint Louis), and in 1943 he received a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago.
