Arden Aanestad age 86 of Edina for 54 years born in Esmond, North Dakota the son of Ditlif and Cora Aanestad passed away on August 27, 2011.

Proceeded in death by his loving wife Phyllis Adele Aanestad and sister Gloria (Wendel).

Survived by children: Leslie (Gary) Thoreson, Jonathan Aanestad, Jennifer Aanestad, and Christopher (Ann) Aanestad. He has ten grandchildren: Erik, Siri, Brynn, Kara, Kelsey, Kellen, Paige, Zoe, Carl and Kim; brother, Robert (Alice) and sister, Corrine (Lester) and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his dear friend and companion Marge Thomas.

Graduated from North Dakota State University with Bachelor of Science. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Blue Key , and Who's Who Among Students. Graduated from Washington State University with Master's Degree in Entomology

His early career began working for DuPont doing research in agricultural chemicals. In 1960, he and his partner, Ward Young started Castle Chemical Co. in Castle Rock, MN. The company expanded to Savage MN, and throughout the 5 state area where he took the position of president and CEO. Before he sold the Company it was considered one of the largest of it's kind in the country. Through an early retirement, he was able to dedicate his time to his love of nature. He was a park naturalist at Richardson Nature Center in Bloomington for nearly 30 years. He was Volunteer of the Year in 1989. He was awarded MN. Tree Farmer of the Year in 2009. He was past president of Izaak Walton League, Ruffed Grouse Society, and the Lake Washburn Association. His love for birds was near and dear to his heart. He was a member of MN. Ornithological Union, MN. River Valley Audubon Chapter, and Bluebird Recovery Program. He was a master birdbander and contributed 25 years of research data to the Migratory Avian Production Survey and to Project Feeder Watch for Cornell University Ornithology Laboratory. He mentored many to become birdbanders. He taught birdwatching classes and lead many birdwatching trips through the Elder Learning Institute. He also belonged to the MN. Mycological Society, Landscape Arboretum Society, MN. Water Gardens, Native Plant Society, The Nature Conservancy and Wild Ones. He was philanthropic to these organizations as well as numerous others. For nearly 50 years he has been philanthropic to St. Joseph Indian School in So.Dak. He was a member of the Lewis and Clark Society, and life member of the National Rifle Association. He liked to hunt and fish and was an amateur nature photographer. He loved to spend time at his cabin and on his tree farm land in northern MN. where he did much of his bird banding. He traveled the world to China, the Soviet Union, Amazon River, Africa, Scandinavia and throughout the US and Canada. His love and generosity will be greatly missed through all the lives he touched. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to the nature organization of your choice.

Interment Roselawn Cemetery, Roseville, MN

Funeral will be Friday, September 2, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. with visitation, Thursday, September 1, 2011 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. and one hour prior to the service all at Washburn-McReavy Funeral Chapel, 5000 West 50th & Hwy 100, Edina, MN 952-920-3996.
