Marvin J. Miller
1909 - 2002
Age 93, died August 13, 2002 at the Franciscan Care Center in Appleton with his family at his side. Marv was born in Kaukauna on April 12, 1909, son of the late Jacob and Anna (Fell) Miller. He was married to Clarine (Derus) Miller, and the couple spent their forty-six years together living in Kaukauna. Marv was an avid sports enthusiast and Green Bay Packer fan, and was a graduate of the Kaukauna High School and St. Mary's College in California where he was a Golden Gloves Champion in 1933. He is a member of the Hall of Fame at both schools. Marv was a teacher and coach for the Christian Brothers High Schools at St. Mary's in Winona, Minnesota, DeLaSalle High School in Kansas City, Missouri, St. Mary's High School in Menasha, and Cretin High School in St. Paul, Minnesota. His final coaching position was with the Norbertine Fathers, coaching and teaching at Green Bay's Catholic Central (formerly Premontre and now Notre Dame DeLeBay). He was proud to have served his country during World War II as a commissioned Naval officer. He was a gunnery officer with the rank of Lieutenant, Jg rank, and served in each of the wartime theatres. Following his discharge from the Navy, Marv worked as a vocational counselor for the Veterans Administration at St. Norbert College. He then worked for nearly fifteen years for Pittsburgh Plate Glass. Marv will be remembered by many as a high school and college official for football and basketball, as well as for his love of the Kaukauna baseball and softball programs. He also served as the Executive Director for HUD, managed the Golden Venture Apartments for five years, and was active with the Kaukauna Community Players.
Survivors include his wife: Clarine of Kaukauna; four children: Stephen Miller of Madison and his special friend Michele, Ted "T.J." Miller of Honolulu, Anne (Steve) Keller of Menasha, and Lisa (Jim) Retelle of Menasha; five grandchildren: Daniel (Lury) Miller of New York City, David Miller of Chicago, Stephannie and Benjamin Keller of Menasha, and Jacob Retelle of Menasha; two great-grandchildren: Renata and Ian Miller of New York City. Marv was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Glen C. (Ruth) Miller, and four sisters Carol (Bill) Ludke, Doris (Karl) Schuler, Mary (Snare) Lucassen, and Gloria (Myron) Bruss.
